Bánhjour French    Vietnamese Café
Context
After the Vietnamese claimed independence from French colonial rule, there was and still exists a French influence on Vietnamese cuisine. This fusion of cuisines is a basis for a variety of famous Vietnamese dishes which quickly spread across the world. Great examples of this would include the Bánh mì, Bánh flan, and Vietnamese coffee.
Method
Banhjour Cafe is an original concept French Vietnamese cafe inspired by this French Vietnamese colonial history. The cafe would be located on Main St. in Vancouver and serve as a restaurant for both dine-in and take-out. The dine-in menu has more refined dishes beef carpaccio and duck breast, and for take-out, they serve items such as coffee and banh mi sandwiches.
Solution
The goal was to represent this fusion of cultures in the visual identity of the brand ‘Bánhjour Café’. The identity is based on vintage french design and typography, attached to a colour palette that contains both historic French and Vietnamese colours, and has graphics based on tile patterns that originated in the time of French Vietnam.

You can see this in the typography on the wordmark and elements like the business cards and menu and The frame element that is inspired by vintage French print works with a Vietnamese twist. The tiles are a successful pattern visual element that is grounded in Vietnamese history and brings a unique look to the visual identity.
